Adobe Unveils Project Indigo: AI-Powered Camera App for iPhones to Boost Image Quality

AI-Powered Camera App for iPhones

Adobe has launched Project Indigo, a next-gen camera app for iPhones, promising DSLR-style quality with the help of AI and computational photography. Available as a free download, the app enhances mobile photo-taking with deeper detail, natural tone, and manual control, moving away from the overly enhanced “smartphone look.”

Currently exclusive to iPhones (starting from the iPhone 12 Pro and select iPhone 14 models), Project Indigo is part of Adobe Labs’ experimental line, joining the ranks of Photoshop and Firefly on iOS.

What Makes Project Indigo Stand Out?

  • AI + Computational Photography: Captures up to 32 frames per image, combining them for better dynamic range, lower noise, and realistic results.
  • Manual Pro Controls: Users can adjust ISO, shutter speed, aperture, white balance, focus, tint, and more, ideal for enthusiasts wanting DSLR-like control.
  • Multi-frame Super Resolution: Instead of losing quality while zooming, it stacks multiple images to produce high-detail zoomed shots.
  • Two Shooting Modes:
    • Photo Mode – for daytime shots
    • Night Mode – for long exposure, low-light images with less blur
  • HDR and SDR Output: Works well with Camera Raw and Lightroom, offering editing flexibility.
  • No Sign-In Needed: Completely free and user-friendly; no Adobe account required.

DSLR-Like Results, Zero Cost

Adobe says it aims to counter the common issues of mobile photography, such as:

  • Overexposed highlights
  • Flat dynamic range
  • Over-sharpened images
By default, Indigo underexposes images slightly to retain more natural color and detail, mirroring professional DSLR photography workflows.

Android Version on the Way

While currently limited to iOS, Adobe has confirmed plans to launch an Android version of Project Indigo soon, opening the door for wider adoption.
