After nearly a month of repair and cleaning work, water will start flowing again in Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati River from today. Initially, on May 12, they emptied the river to allow pre-monsoon maintenance of the Vasna Barrage and to carry out a large-scale cleanliness drive across the riverbed

We expect the reintroduction of water to restore the river’s scenic beauty and improve the overall environment along the riverfront. Authorities aim to ensure a cleaner and safer river space for the public ahead of the monsoon season.

Vasna Barrage Maintenance and Clean-Up Drive

The Sabarmati Riverfront had gone dry due to crucial maintenance work at the Vasna Barrage, which holds and regulates the water level in the river. This work included:

  • Repairs to the barrage’s 30 gates, which control the river’s water flow.
  • Construction of a temporary earthen ramp upstream to support repair activities.
  • Inspections and desilting to prepare for the monsoon season.

During this period, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) took the opportunity to conduct a massive river cleaning campaign.

Key highlights of the clean-up:

  • Over 76 tonnes of waste were collected on the first day of the drive.
  • Approximately 9,000 volunteers participated, comprising students, citizens, AMC staff, and representatives from NGOs.
  • Efforts were made to remove plastic waste, religious offerings, and industrial residue.

The aim was not only to improve the river’s appearance but also to protect the ecosystem before the onset of rains.

Water Releasing from June 5

With maintenance now complete, authorities have confirmed that they will release water back into the river starting June 5. Consequently, the move will revive the beauty of the Sabarmati Riverfront, which is, in fact, one of the most visited public places in Ahmedabad. The city expects the restored water flow to enhance its environment and public experience, especially with an increase in tourist footfall anticipated during the monsoon.

Officials have stated that they will closely monitor the water inflow to ensure safety and proper water level management.

Summary

The authorities will empty the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad for Vasna Barrage repair and a major clean-up effort; consequently, it will receive fresh water from June 5. Moreover, with over 9,000 people contributing to cleaning nearly 80 tonnes of waste, the river is now ready to welcome back flowing water, just ahead of the monsoon season. Ultimately, this marks a major step toward restoring and preserving Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati River.
