The Gujarat government has announced a major step toward clean energy by investing INR 29,000 crore to build the third Green Energy Corridor (GEC-III). This project will help carry 16,500 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind power from different parts of the state to where it’s needed most.

According to officials, the new corridor will connect renewable energy zones in Kutch, Jamnagar-Bet Dwarka, Banaskantha-Patan, and Central Gujarat. It aims to strengthen Gujarat’s electricity system so it can handle more green power in the future.

Currently, 58% of Gujarat’s total power capacity comes from renewable sources like solar and wind. With GEC-III, the state wants to make sure that this clean energy reaches homes, industries, and farmers smoothly and without power cuts.

As part of the plan, the project will include 3,430 km of high-voltage power lines connected to six 765 kV substations and another 860 km of lines linked to four 400 kV substations. Four statcoms will also be used to maintain power quality and reduce fluctuations.

This is not the first such project in Gujarat. The earlier corridors – GEC-I (INR 1,932 crore) and GEC-II (INR 3,636 crore) – were designed to handle smaller capacities. GEC-II is expected to be completed by March 2027.

In addition to this, the government is also upgrading its local electricity network under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). This includes installing underground cables, reducing power loss, and using digital tools to monitor and manage electricity more efficiently.

Officials say this new investment will help Gujarat become future-ready by ensuring clean, affordable, and reliable electricity for all sectors.
