The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts in Gujarat, forecasting heavy to very heavy unseasonal rainfall from May 23 to May 25, 2025. This weather pattern is attributed to a developing low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea, which may intensify into a depression, bringing significant rainfall and gusty winds to the region.
Districts Under Orange Alert (May 23–25)
The IMD’s orange alert indicates the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the following districts:
- May 23: Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Amreli, and Bhavnagar.
- May 24: Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Junagadh, Gir Somnath, and Diu.
- May 25: Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Junagadh, and Gir Somnath.
Additionally, several other districts, including Rajkot, Surat, Tapi, and Porbandar, are under yellow alerts, indicating the possibility of moderate rainfall and thunderstorms during this period.
Advisory for Fishermen and Coastal Residents
The IMD has advised fishermen, especially those in coastal regions of South Gujarat, to avoid venturing into the sea from May 22 onwards due to anticipated rough sea conditions and strong winds. Residents in low-lying coastal areas are also urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Urban Preparedness and Infrastructure Concerns
In cities like Surat, even a short spell of 14mm rain on May 21 led to significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions, highlighting vulnerabilities in urban infrastructure. Ongoing construction projects, such as Metro Rail and drainage works, have exacerbated the situation, making roads less navigable.
In response to the forecasted heavy rains, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed district administrations to keep control rooms operational 24×7 and to implement precautionary measures to mitigate potential risks.
Outlook Beyond May 25
The IMD anticipates that the unseasonal rainfall may continue in parts of Gujarat until May 27, with varying intensities across different regions. The situation is being closely monitored, and further updates will be provided as necessary
