PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today strongly criticized the Congress party while remembering the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. The Government of India is observing June 25 as Constitution Assassination Day, marking five decades since the Emergency was imposed in 1975.

This day is being remembered as one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy. The Central Government is holding an event at the Thyagaraj Stadium in Delhi to mark the occasion.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “Today marks 50 years since the Emergency, one of the darkest chapters in the history of Indian democracy. On this day, the values of the Constitution of India were ignored. Fundamental rights were violated and freedom of the press was abolished.”

He further added that many political leaders, social workers, students and common people were sent to jail, and that democracy was held hostage under the Congress rule.

“Congress was forced to restore democracy”: PM Modi

The Prime Minister saluted those who fought against the Emergency, saying, “We salute everyone who stood firm during the Emergency. People from different states, backgrounds, and ideologies united to protect Indian democracy. Their struggle forced the Congress to restore democracy. Fresh elections were held, and the Congress faced a crushing defeat.”

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protect the Constitution and work toward a developed India. “We have reached new heights of development. Let us fulfill the dreams of the poor and underprivileged,” Modi stated.

Book ‘The Emergency Diaries’ to be launched today

As part of the 50-year remembrance, a book titled ‘The Emergency Diaries: Years That Forged a Leader’ will be released today. The book is based on PM Modi’s own experiences during the Emergency, as he was an active youth participant in those years. It will be unveiled by Home Minister Amit Shah and published by Bluecraft Publications.

The government had already declared last year that June 25 would be marked every year as Constitution Assassination Day, to educate the public about the threat posed to democracy during the Emergency.
